On August 4, David Anthony spent an evening on the phones for the Nashville Bar Association’s Dial-A-Lawyer program, fielding free legal questions from members of the public who might not otherwise have access to an attorney.
Held on the first Tuesday of every month, Dial-A-Lawyer connects callers with volunteer attorneys for general legal guidance at no cost. For two hours, David and his fellow volunteers worked through a steady stream of calls covering everything from landlord-tenant disputes to questions about small business debts—no two conversations alike, and no shortage of Nashvillians grateful just to have a lawyer on the other end of the line.
“I only had time to handle two calls, but, in those two calls, the callers got a lot of lawyering,” David says. “The callers had no idea if what they were dealing with was normal or what options they had, but, after those two calls, they seemed like they had good information and a plan. For someone who has, maybe, been putting off a problem because they didn’t know where to turn, it felt like it made a real difference.”
Dial-A-Lawyer has long been one of the Nashville Bar Association’s signature public service programs, and Exo Legal is proud to keep showing up for it. We’ll be back.
